INTRODUCTION
NOTICE: I would like to inform you that I will not be updating this guide very much anymore, as I have lost interest in ToS. Perhaps in the future I may come back to ToS, but I'm currently burned out from it. I will try to revisit this guide every now and then to answer your questions though. Sorry for any late replies.

This is a full-time tanking build for PvE/PvP that's focused on being able to take hits while also having enough DPS to be able to solo without taking too long to kill a single mob. I am currently rank 7 with this build, and I love it. It's very fun to be able to face-tank hits from things that normally would've ripped out a good chunk of your health if you were on a "squishier" character. This build will allow you to face-tank just about anything and laugh at the boss's meager attempts to harm you as you smash their face in. Tanks in Tree of Savior are surprisingly harder hitters than what you would normally expect from most MMORPGs, especially after the combat update. I've sometimes even been able to reach 3rd place in DPS in the Siaulai mission and other dungeons before. This build has MANY skills to increase your survivability, offensive, and CC skills, and attributes that will even further boost the damage of the offensive skills (and I'm not just talking about enhancement attributes). Cassis Crista will boost the damage of many of your other skills if you have the attributes for them, as well as High Guard's attributes to boost Umbo and Rim Blow, and many more. This build is mostly focused on PvE, though it still has plenty of PvP utilities, such as the plethora of CC skills, though I have yet to try this build out in TBL.

Stat Point Distribution
Invested STR - 192
Invested CON - 142
Invested DEX - 34
Invest 2:1 STR:CON. 34 DEX is there so you can have a good base of 100 block penetration. You can get more block pen. from gear. You don't need as much CON as you do STR because CON scales very well for Swordsmen. This should give you plenty of health, while also being able to deal decent damage so that solo content isn't painstakingly long. Even in a party, having good damage as a tank is also helpful as you can help kill the boss faster. You wont be investing in SPR, so you'll be a bit reliant on SP potions to keep your SP up.

Skill Point Explanation and Progression
Here I will explain why I've put my skill points where I put them. The progression description is made to make leveling as easy and efficient as possible.



Swordsman 1:
Bash - This is a great, spammable knockback utility for PvP, but it's only here for that. If you don't care too much for PvP, then don't bother with it. You already have plenty of other CC knockback skills if you're just worried about PvE. The damage from this may help you level during the lower ranks, but damage-wise alone, this skill will become useless quite quickly.
Concentrate - This is a great skill with no drawbacks. Try to keep this up as much as you can.
Gung Ho - This wont increase your damage as much as Concentrate will, but it doesn't have a hit limit. It will only decrease your physical defense by a tiny amount, but you can't use it with Guardian, so it's just there for when you're soloing.
Pain Barrier - This is an absolute MUST to max out for ANY Swordsman, regardless of your roll. You're a melee fighter, which means that you're vulnerable to knockback unless you have this on. This is hands down the best skill that Swordsman has to offer. Never neglect to max this skill out, no matter who you are.
Thrust - This skill is just garbage for most builds. Its damage and windup time is terrible. Even auto attacks with almost no DEX are faster than this. Don't waste your valuable points on this. Please.

Progression - If you chose to pick up Bash, pick that one up first and get it to level 3. At rank 1, this skill's AoE and damage will help immensely, and will probably continue to be effective damage-wise until rank 3 (If you chose not to get Bash, just put those points into Concentrate and Gung Ho instead). Afterwards, put a point into Concentrate and a point into Gung Ho, then get Concentrate to level 4, and then Gung Ho to level 3. Pain Barrier is maxed out last because Knockback isn't too much of a worry at rank 1.



Peltasta 1:
Umbo Blow - This will provide you with some nice AoE damage, and does an additional line of damage if performed after a successful block (an enemy will flash green if you block their attack).
Rim Blow - Does just as much damage as Umbo Blow, but provides knockback, and does not do additional damage after a block. However, it does do additional damage against frozen or petrified enemies.
Swashbuckling - The main reason why people choose Peltasta. Always max this. This is the only taunt in the game, and is an AoE taunt as well. This is great even when soloing, as it will bring the mobs to you, so you don't have to go to them.
Guardian Not really that necessary at just rank 2, since you aren't even able to do any dungeons yet. Other builds who only get 1 circle of Peltasta may want to max this, but since we're going Pelt 2 and 3 later, we only need 1 point in this for now. Those points are better used in increasing your offense.

Progression - Put your first point into Swashbuckling for now. This will make grinding easier as the mobs will all crowd around you, eager to be hit by your sword. They just love being smacked in the face. Afterwards, put your next point into Umbo Blow and then Rim Blow, and then max out Umbo Blow, since the AoE it gives makes it more useful than Rim Blow. After maxing Umbo, put 3 more points into Rim Blow, then finish maxing out Swashbuckling. Afterwards, you can put your final point into Guardian.

Peltasta 2:
Shield Lob - This can provide some nice damage early on, though with only 1 point, it will quickly fall off at the next rank. However, it's your ONLY ranged skill, and it has a very nice AoE range, so it can be great even late game for pulling/keeping aggro on you when surrounded by mobs. The main function of this skill, for this build, is aggro maintenance; not damage alone. When you throw your shield, you only lose the defense it gives, not the other stats; you can even still block without it, so don't be afraid to throw your shield if you need to.
High Guard - Gives some extra block rating, with very little drawbacks or downsides. Good skill, but doesn't give a whole lot of block per skill level, so it's left at 1 point. It's main purpose though is the attributes that it has, not just the block it gives.

Progression - Put your first point into Shield Lob and your next point into High Guard. Then one more point into Umbo Blow and 2 more into Rim Blow. Rank 3 is where you'll start doing dungeons, so put 5 more points into Guardian. Afterwards, put the rest of your points into Swashbuckling.



Rodelero 1:
Shield Charge - Great CC skill with massive knockback. If you accidentally bit off more than you can chew and need some breathing space, this is a great skill to use. It will take the enemy a while to get back to you. Also really great in PvP.
Montano - Also a great CC skill. Knocks the enemy down (not back) on their butts and they spin around a bit, and also has a chance (exact chance unknown) to paralyze the opponent for 1 second. Great for both PvE and PvP, and can lead into other combos.
Targe Smash - The bread and butter skill of the Rodelero. One of the best damage skills they have, and can do up to TWICE as much damage per hit on frozen and petrified enemies with the Targe Smash: Frozen Stone attribute maxed. You MUST max this.
Shield Push - This skill is really only useful for the interrupt utility. If a mob is about to attack, you can quickly use this to interrupt its attack (does not work on bosses, only mobs). It's DPM (damage per minute) is very low, and the ONLY thing that the Unbalanced debuff does is reduce the enemy's defense by ONE POINT per attribute level, and only lasts 5 seconds. That's absolutely laughable, even if it were maxed out at level 15. The mob interruption ability is the only reason why you would get this. Only worth 1 point in ANY build EVER. It's also another attack skill to add to your arsenal. You don't have to get this skill if you don't want to, though.
Shield Shoving - A nice skill with good damage, the same interrupt utility as Shield Push (except it works on BOSSES!), and turns the mob around, temporarily disabling them from being able to do anything at all for 1.5 seconds. A great skill that should be maxed for this rank.

Progression - Put your first point into Targe Smash, then a point into Sheild Shoving, a point into Mantano, and then a point into Shield Charge. Afterwards, max out Targe Smash first and then Shield Shoving. Lastly, you can put a point into Shield Push if you decide to get it.

Rodelero 2:
Shield Bash - A great offensive skill with the 3rd highest amount of damage for Rodelero (next to Targe Smash). It also scrambles the enemy's stats, so it's great for PvP. It could swap their CON with their INT, or their STR with their SPR. The scramble effect lasts 1 second per skill level. Absolutely a must have.
Slithering - Puts you in a slow, crouching position as you move around, increasing your evasion, block chance, and resistance to status ailments such as Sleep while in use, and uses a sweeping sword attack when released. Great for use when an enemy is about to use a Sleep powder move (it's not guaranteed to work, but it seems to be more than 50% resist chance). It also has a GREAT attribute that can cause many debuffs on an enemy when attacked with this skill, such as reducing movement speed by up to 18 and reducing evasion by 75 at level 5, and also knocks the enemy down. A great utility move for both PvE and PvP.

Progression - Put a point into Shield Bash and then a point into Slithering. Afterwards, max out Targe Smash, then Shield Bash, and then Shield Shoving.

Rodelero 3:
Shooting Star - An amazing ability, and the strongest move available for Rodelero. It's a multihit attack with 2 overheat. The only reason why this isn't considered your "bread and butter" skill is simply because it isn't spammed as often as Targe Smash is. Targe Smash does more damage if it's against frozen/petrified enemies, but otherwise, this does more damage. Absolutely MUST max this.
High Kick - This should be the FIRST skill you use in your rotations. Enemies that are hit by this will take MUCH more damage from your strike attacks for 10 seconds. Try to keep this up as much as possible, as it will nearly double your DPS. Worth 1 point for the amazing utility.

Progression - Put a point into High Kick and then a point into Shooting Star. Afterwards, max out Targe Smash, then Shooting Star, and then Shield Bash. If you decided not to get Shield Push, you can put that point into Shield Shoving. Otherwise, Shield Shoving is left at level 10 because the other skills do more damage.



Peltasta 3:
Butterfly - A multihit attack that does just slightly less damage than Umbo Thrust, but is still great to have, and should be maxed out. Also has a pretty cool animation. You dance around a little bit like a Fencer.
Umbo Thrust - Your strongest Peltasta skill. Has about a 50% chance to completely negate the enemy's physical defense to 0 for 3 seconds, making your next attack do much more damage. This should definitely be maxed.
Langort - This is really just a PvP skill, as its damage is terrible and scales terribly with level, so if you DO want to put a point into it, it's only worth 1 point. You can take a point out of Butterfly if you want this skill. While using this skill, your block chance is increased up to 20% during the attack animation with the Langort: Blocking attribute maxed, and if you do manage to successfully block an attack with it, the enemy will be silenced for 3 seconds. You have PLENTY of other skills that can disable the enemy from using any attacks in PvE, so it's mostly just for PvP. If you're not that focused on PvP, don't bother getting this.

Progression - Put your first point into Umbo Thrust and your next point into Butterfly. Afterwards, max out Umbo Thrust, then Butterfly, and then lastly Swashbuckling.



Murmillo 1:
Cassis Crista - Obviously, you need this. You can't use Frenzied Slash or Evade Thrust without it on, and using Headbutt without it can cause it to stun yourself. It also has many AMAZING attributes that boost the damage of almost all of your other Peltasta and Rodelero skills with the Crista equipped. It also increases your chance to avoid missile and magic attacks with it equipped. The only downside to equipping the Crista is that it decreases your movement speed by 1 point. You can use the skill again to unequip it. It has no cooldown or SP cost.
Frenzied Slash - A lunge followed by a slash. Really great in PvP, but not so useful in PvE, due to the fact that it doesn't do as much damage as the other skills, and doesn't scale very well per level. It can be great for closing the distance between you and the opponent. Not worth more than 1 point.
Evade Thrust - Your ONLY pierce move in your entire arsenal. A skill with great damage, and has up to a 10% chance to cause the enemy to bleed with the Evade Thrust: Bleed attribute maxed. The Bleed damage is dependent on your STR, so the Bleed should do a lot of damage with our high STR build.
Headbutt - A skill with great damage that turns the enemy around when hit, and has a chance to stun the enemy for 3 seconds, or a chance to stun yourself if you don't have the Cassis Crista equipped. However, it doesn't do as much damage as Evade Thrust or Scutum Hit, so it only gets 3 points.
Scutum Hit - The bread and butter skill of Murmillos. Very spammable and does a LOT of damage. Has up to a 9% chance to stun the target for 2 seconds with the Scutum Hit: Stun attribute maxed.

Progression - Put your first point into Scutum hit and then your next point into Cassis Crista. Afterwards, put a point into Evade Thrust, then Headbutt, and then Frenzied Slash. Lastly, max out Scutum Hit, then Evade Thrust, and then put 2 more points into Headbutt.

Skill Rotation
Against a boss in PvE:

Put on Cassis Crista, apply Concentrate -> Guardian -> High Guard -> Pain Barrier, then rush into the boss and start with High Kick -> Umbo Thrust x1 (for debuff) -> Rising Star x2 (Umbo Thrust debuff ends) -> Umbo Thrust x1 -> Scutum Hit x3 (Umbo Thrust debuff ends) -> Targe Smash x3 (High Kick debuff ends) -> Umbo Blow x2 -> Rim Blow x2 -> Shield Shoving x2 -> Butterfly x2 -> High Kick -> Shield Bash x2 -> Headbutt x2 -> Evade Thrust x2 -> Shield Push -> Umbo Blow x2 -> Rim Blow x2 (High Kick debuff and High Guard buff ends).

Ofc, you can use Swash Buckling after High Guard if you're in a party, but make sure you use Pain Barrier last to make sure that it lasts as long as possible.
After this rotation, you'll probably want to drink some SP potions, as it will deplete almost all of your SP.
Rising Star and Scutum Hit are your two strongest moves, so they should be used immediately after you apply the Umbo Thrust debuff for each. After you complete this rotation, you pretty much just use whatever comes off cooldown (while trying to save Umbo Thrust+High Kick debuff stacks for Rising Star and Scutum Hit, if you can).

Attack an enemy by throwing your shield. Your shield drops on the targeted area, and your physical defense decreases based on the value of the equipment. The shield may be picked up immediately, or it will automatically return to your inventory after a certain amount of time. The decreased physical defense will return back to normal once your shield is back in your inventory. If the attack is accurate, 30% of your shield's physical defense is added as extra physical attack and provocation applies 50 times higher.

Nice Guide. My man is looking at playing a tank. We are brand new to the game. Are you back playing the game. It sounds like you are. ;-). If so, Maybe it would be good to update your note at the top of the guide since you are back and are updating this guide. =D

My man wants to be a main tank. Is this a good build for him? If not, could you point me in the right direction?

Sorry for the incredibly late reply. No, I haven't gotten back into the game. Just got back into it once to test something for one of the other commenters, but then left again. I just visit my builds every once in a while to see how they're doing. But yes, I believe this is still a very good build for tanking. I have a friend who still plays and he tells me about the new updates in ToS, and it doesn't sound like much of anything has changed for Swordsmen to warrant this build ineffective in any way.

Tbh, getting the perfect rotation down with this build is a lot more complex than I thought it would be, due to the massive amount of skills. I'm still experimenting with it myself, but what I do currently against a boss is:

Put on Cassis Crista, apply Concentrate -> Guardian -> High Guard -> Pain Barrier, then rush into the boss and start with High Kick -> Umbo Thrust x1 (for debuff) -> Rising Star x2 (Umbo Thrust debuff ends) -> Umbo Thrust x1 -> Scutum Hit x3 (Umbo Thrust debuff ends) -> Targe Smash x3 (High Kick debuff ends) -> Umbo Blow x2 -> Rim Blow x2 -> Shield Shoving x2 -> Butterfly x2 -> High Kick -> Shield Bash x2 -> Headbutt x2 -> Evade Thrust x2 -> Shield Push -> Umbo Blow x2 -> Rim Blow x2 (High Kick debuff and High Guard buff ends).

Ofc, you can use Swash Buckling after High Guard if you're in a party, but make sure you use Pain Barrier last to make sure that it lasts as long as possible.
After this rotation, you'll probably want to drink some SP potions, as it will deplete almost all of your SP.
Rising Star and Scutum Hit are your two strongest moves, so they should be used immediately after you apply the Umbo Thrust debuff for each. After you complete this rotation, you pretty much just use whatever comes off cooldown (while trying to save Umbo Thrust+High Kick debuff stacks for Rising Star and Scutum Hit, if you can). This is the best rotation for single target PvE that I've come up with so far, but if you can find an even better rotation than this, please let me know.

Sorry, I've mostly lost interest in the game, so I haven't been keeping up-to-date with the new card mechanic. You'll probably want blue gems in your boots and red gems in your pants and chest. Don't know about much else. Idk much about endgame armor either. I've just been wearing Nyx Knight armor up to endgame. When in doubt, Hunting Ground plate gear is always a good default. Maybe eventually I might get back into ToS again and could do more research into new armor sets. Sorry I couldn't help you much there, and for the late reply. I'd look for the answers elsewhere for now.

Invested means you put 33 points into it; not when you reach 33 DEX. Base is how much you actually have after you invest your points.
Also, very sorry for the late reply. Haven't really been playing ToS much lately.

I just realized I made a mistake. You actually want to invest 34 DEX in order to get a base 39 DEX so that you can have a block penetration of 100. 33 invested will only give you 99 block pen. Not a big deal if it's too late, but I do apologize if so.
